Coggins Test for Travel

If your horse needs to travel abroad or has an upcoming show, they will need a Coggins Test. We take a blood sample to screen for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA), a fatal disease that can be transmitted by horses since the infection never leaves their bodies. Only a Coggins accredited veterinarian can administer the test and our veterinary team has a number of doctors with this accreditation.

When does the test need to be done?

The test is a multi-step process that requires coordination with our laboratory, so it’s important to start ahead of time. For travel to the USA, the test should be done within 180 days of your departure. Depending on the show your horse is participating in, there may be different time frames they require you have the test within –  After taking a blood sample from your horse, we send the test to an external lab to process it, which can take up to 2-3 weeks. Along with the blood test, we also fill out comprehensive paperwork. To ensure your horse gets their results on time, please book an appointment at (705) 753-0324.
